irak crew

Martins founded the IRAK crew of like-minded, fearless and progressive artists in New York City’s Lower East Side in the late 90s’. The name comes from the phase “I rack” or “I steal”. The excitement of painting better than anyone else, pushing one’s own limits and supporting each other is integral to IRAK’s strength and energy.

The two long-time members of the IRAK crew, Kunle Martins and Jesse Geller, developed their mural at the Wynwood Walls around the idea of layering tags upon tags upon tags to create an abstract sublime pattern. The dazzling effect of their completed wall is opposite of what you associate with the tag- instead of being chaotic it is seductive, a harmonious testament to the skill involved with writing one’s name.
