Simon Berger

Simon Berger is a contemporary Swiss visual artist renowned for his innovative work with glass. His groundbreaking technique involves hammering, lacerating, and cracking glass to create mesmerizing portraits and intricate designs that play with light and transparency.

Berger’s artistic journey began with experiments in wood and scrap metal inspired by urban street art. His signature style emerged when he started working with car windshields, exploring the interplay of fractures and reflections. Fascinated by the human face, Berger engraves portraits that he describes as “Morphogenesis,” creating a labyrinth of cracks and lesions that transform the medium into an expressive canvas of light and shadow.

Far from an act of destruction, Berger’s process redefines the concept of breaking. “Disorder does not only lead to crime. Disorder can also be the kingdom of light. It’s about hope. Light emerges from the hammer blows,” the artist explains. The glass, as a medium, becomes a vessel for light, and the hammer an instrument of creation.

Born in 1976, Simon Berger has exhibited his work globally, captivating audiences with his ability to transform the fragile nature of glass into a powerful artistic statement. He is celebrated as a pioneer in the art of sculpting glass through deliberate breaking, redefining the boundaries of contemporary visual art.
